Racing Shoes for Speed and Performance

August 12, 2012 By Complete Runner

Pink Nike Free Racing Flats

If you are a competitive runner looking to improve your race times, take a look at your shoes and see if they are helping or holding you back.  Racing flats and racer trainers are made specifically to improve your speed and performance and should be considered for any serious runner.  What exactly are racing shoes, and how will they help you compete at the next level?

Race car drivers know that extra weight slows them down, so they work hard to make sure their vehicle is as light as possible and replace certain parts with high performance, lightweight parts.  Running shoes are no different.

The lighter your shoe, the faster you should be able to run.  You may be wondering how a racing shoe that is only a few ounces lighter will really optimize your racing performance, and that is a good question.  However, if you consider the force and effort you put into picking up your feet over three miles, or even ten or twenty six miles, you can imagine how a lighter shoe can be more efficient and require less energy exertion over the long haul.

In a sense a racing shoe is a stripped down version of a “typical” running shoe.  Like a minimalist shoe, racing shoes have a lower heal drop which causes you to run more efficiently and naturally on your forefoot.  On the flip side, racing shoes still have more cushion and support than a minimalist shoe which will still allow you to run relaxed.  Racer trainers are a hybrid between racing flats and traditional running shoes and can be worn when training shorter distances as well as during the race, whereas racing flats aren’t as durable and shouldn’t be used for training.

We also suggest a good pair of thinner, wicking socks to go along with your racing shoes for optimal performance.

If you are considering racing shoes, feel free to stop by Complete Runner to learn more about racing flats and racer trainers, and see our wide selection from Nike, K-Swiss, Puma, New Balance, Mizuno, Brooks, and Saucony.

Running Insoles Made Specifically for Running Shoes Now Available at Complete Runner

March 31, 2012 By Complete Runner

footdisc runpro insole

Complete Runner strives to keep current with the latest developments in running shoe technology to offer our customers the best running products on the market.  After some research and many phone calls with the inventor we are pleased to now offer the currexSole insole by Currex, an insole made specifically for running shoes!

The insole that typically comes in a running shoe is thin and flimsy.  If you have your running shoes nearby take one of the insoles out and you will see what we are talking about.  Not much in terms of cushion or support.

There are many insoles you can purchase for your shoes.  In fact, we sell some of those here at the store.  However, these insoles may offer different types for different uses, such as active living and casual wear but not specifically for running.  In comparison, the currexSole is the only insole on the market that is specifically designed for running shoes!

The company who designed these running specific insoles was started by a sports scientist and former elite triathlon athlete.  Not only are these insoles designed specifically for running shoes, they are designed by runners.  The Currex website states:

“We are athletes and scientists and wanted to design an insole that we wear by ourselves. That means: A high-end sports instrument with excellent performance, low weight, outstanding comfort and breathability. We needed the insole so that the typical aches and pains are not turning into severe pain.”

As we mentioned we only sell the most technologically advanced and innovative products at Complete Runner, so it was a no brainer for us to start offering these insoles as they were voted the Best Running Insole by Running Fitness Magazine.

The currexSoles take into account the three major foot types including high, medium, and low arch.  All you need to do is stand on the Footdisc and it will determine your foot type and shoe size within a few seconds.  After this we will ask you to stand with your feet together so we check your leg axis for bow-legs, straight legs, or knock-knees.  Finally, our expert staff will connect the dots to determine your custom fitted insole!

We are extremely excited to be able to offer this innovative insole made specifically for running shoes made by and for runners.  Local runners are already noticing the big difference currexSole insoles make in their running shoes, and have shared comments such as:

“The insoles add extra comfort and support to your shoe that was lacking by the insoles that my shoes came with.” ~Michelle

“I can’t believe the difference these insoles make.  With a currexSole insole in one shoe and the regular shoe insole in the other the currexSole offers noticeably better support for my feet.”  ~Ryan

We invite you to join the satisfied local runners who use currexSole insoles for added comfort, support, and cushion in their running shoes.  Stop by Complete Runner and try the difference for yourself.

How Long Do Running Shoes Last?

March 31, 2012 By Complete Runner

old running shoes

Some people think a good pair of running shoes will last a year or more.  For example, let’s imagine the weekend warrior.  He or she runs in a handful of races over the summer and doesn’t rack up a lot of miles on their shoes.  When next summer arrives, they dig their running shoes out of the closet and since they still look “good” they tie them up and run the race.  However, mid-way through the race the racer’s feet start to ache and are extremely uncomfortable.  He or she passes it off, using the excuse they ache since they haven’t ran in a few months.

Sure, you will definitely ache after not running for a few months but that doesn’t mean you also don’t need a new pair of running shoes.

Curtis wrote a great article about this on I Run Flint titled When to Replace Running Shoes.  Read the article to lean how the midsoles of shoes harden over time by just sitting around or from exposure to water and other elements, and why it is important for the longevity of your running to get new running shoes.

We turn aching feet into happy feet, so stop by Complete Runner today and let our expert staff help you find the right pair of running shoes for your feet!

How to Keep Your Feet Dry When Running in the Winter

January 20, 2012 By Complete Runner

When you are running in the winter you have the following options to keep your feet comfortable, dry, and warm:

  1. Duct tape the toes of your shoes to try to keep your toes dry, and possibly make a fashion statement.
  2. Wear running shoes that will protect your feet from the elements.
  3. Do nothing and run miserably in wet, cold feet.

You don’t have to get frostbitten toes after a run in the winter because your feet got wet running through fresh fallen snow, and you certainly don’t need to waste your precious duct tape on your shoes to keep your feet dry.  Certain running shoes are made waterproof and have lots of traction and grip that will make a big difference when running in the winter elements.  Winter running shoes also have extra protection (rubber) around the toes to keep them dry and protected from snow and ice.

A few shoes that are great for winter running are the Brooks Ghost GTX and Saucony Xodus.  Stop by Complete Runner today to check them out (styles and colors may vary from pictures shown) and our other winter running apparel, traction aids, and exercise equipment for those of you who would rather be running inside than in the single digit temperatures.

When is the last time you used duct tape on your running shoes?
