Are You Running ‘til You Puke?

April 27, 2016 By Complete Runner

Running Motivation

Some people vomit during a race but not during training. Why would that happen? A couple of reasons:

  1. During training you are in aerobic state of training and during the race, anaerobic.  Anaerobic means “living without air”, as opposed to aerobic which means “living in the presence of air”. During training you are managing your breathing because you are used to the pace, you can carry on a conversation. During the race your adrenaline from the excitement will have you pushing beyond the training, huffing and puffing creating energy production faster than your body can adequately deliver oxygen. This will create high lactate acid levels in the muscles, along with disruptions in functions including the tummy.
  2. Don’t try anything new for up to a week before the race. And whatever you do don’t overdose on carbs. We’ve all heard of loading up on pasta, just don’t have more than your body can process before the race or try another carb choice.
  3. You’ll want to hydrate before and during the race but don’t overdrink water, it will dilute your electrolytes and do the opposite of what you want causing Hyponatremia (low sodium levels). Make sure your hydration includes electrolytes.

A Fun Alternative to Replenish Electrolytes After Running

June 20, 2014 By Complete Runner

watermelon for runners

When it comes time for runners to hydrate, there are typically a few choices.

Filtered water will get your mouth wet, but is really “dead water” and won’t replenish the nutrients that you lost. Another choice is sugary sports drinks.

We’ve always said that the best hydration for runners is electrolyte enhanced drinks with low or no sugar.  However, what if there was a fun alternative to hydration for runners?

Actually, there is. Take a visit to the new Davison or Flint Farmer’s Markets and you will most likely find some tasty watermelon there that will not only taste good at your picnics this summer but will also quench your thirst and replenish your electrolytes after a run.

Stay safe and hydrate this summer with electrolytes from Complete Runner, and some all natural watermelon from the local market!

Hey Runner, Don’t Forget About Hydration

June 26, 2013 By Complete Runner

stay hydrated when running in the heat

You wouldn’t forget your running shoes as you headed off to run, or leave behind your race bib as you jog to the starting line. Well, some of us might, but that is a totally different discussion.

What we are trying to get across is the fact that you typically won’t forget the obvious, but somehow runners find it easy to forget about hydration before going on a run…even “experienced” runners. This can be potentially dangerous in the hot summer months, causing cramping and dehydration, making it difficult to finish your workout or race.

As you sweat out sodium, potassium, and electrolytes during your run, they need to be replaced in order for you to continue to perform your best. The best hydration for runners is electrolyte enhanced drinks, preferably with low sugar. Water will just wet your mouth as it will not replace the nutrients that you are losing.

Make sure you properly hydrate before, during, and after your run to get the most out of your workout and save yourself from cramping and dehydration. A water belt can help to keep you hydrated on longer runs and ensure you always have fluid at all times. The best advice is to be smart and plan out your hydration in advance as you would plan out your run so you don’t leave your well-being to chance.
