Stretching, Compression Socks Can Help Tight Calf Muscles

July 29, 2012 By Complete Runner

how to loosen tight calf muscles

If you are a runner, you will experience tight calf muscles sometime in your lifetime.

When you run or work out you can experience mico-tears in your calves, sometimes to the extreme point when it is difficult to run or finish your workout.  This will cause your muscles to spasm and block off the blood flow in your calves, causing them to tighten and cramp up.

Not fun.

So, how do you loosen up tight calves?  There is a hint in the title of this article.

Check out this month’s Ask the Expert column on I Run Flint to learn more about How to Loosen Up Tight Calves.

The Dreaded Side Stitch

May 30, 2012 By Complete Runner

side stitch

If you are a runner you have probably experienced the dreaded side stitch – the annoying sharp pain in your side when running.  As a Crim training co-leader and running store owner Curtis gets asked about these painful cramps frequently and was just featured in an article on I Run Flint answering the question “What Causes a Side Stitch While Running?”

There could be multiple factors that cause a side stitch, but Curtis’ suggests in the article that most of the time it comes down to your diet.  Simply watch what you eat before you go running and stay away from gassy foods, and by doing so you could prevent the cramping before it even starts.  Read the entire article to learn more.

How Long Do Running Shoes Last?

March 31, 2012 By Complete Runner

old running shoes

Some people think a good pair of running shoes will last a year or more.  For example, let’s imagine the weekend warrior.  He or she runs in a handful of races over the summer and doesn’t rack up a lot of miles on their shoes.  When next summer arrives, they dig their running shoes out of the closet and since they still look “good” they tie them up and run the race.  However, mid-way through the race the racer’s feet start to ache and are extremely uncomfortable.  He or she passes it off, using the excuse they ache since they haven’t ran in a few months.

Sure, you will definitely ache after not running for a few months but that doesn’t mean you also don’t need a new pair of running shoes.

Curtis wrote a great article about this on I Run Flint titled When to Replace Running Shoes.  Read the article to lean how the midsoles of shoes harden over time by just sitting around or from exposure to water and other elements, and why it is important for the longevity of your running to get new running shoes.

We turn aching feet into happy feet, so stop by Complete Runner today and let our expert staff help you find the right pair of running shoes for your feet!

Use Interval Training to Start Running Again

January 29, 2012 By Complete Runner

Curtis was recently featured on I Run Flint’s Ask the Expert column answering the common question “How do I start running again after an injury or taking a break?”  The simple and easy answer is to use interval training.  As quoted from his response:

“The tip to get started again is quite simple: take it slow.  One way is to start with interval training.   Try running for a minute followed by a minute walk, and gradually over time move to two minutes running and one minute walking.  After you can handle four minutes of running and one minute of walking start to wean yourself off the walk until you are running continuously.”

Read the entire article on I Run Flint for more information on this topic.

If you desire to start running again or are coming off an injury and want to give interval training a try, check out the interval timers and GPS enabled watches that we have available at Complete Runner to help with your interval training.  Stop by the store to learn more and get back to running the correct way.
