The Best of Pants and Tights for Running in Cold Weather

December 27, 2012 By Complete Runner

running pants

Don’t be that person who runs in shorts outside all winter long.  That is not cool; well, actually, now that I think about it you would be quite cool.

Since the quads are the largest muscle group of the body they provide some heat, making it easier for runners to potentially get away with running in cold weather with shorts or thin tights.  However, this isn’t usually the best thing to do.

Since it is harder for your muscles to loosen up when it is cold outside, keeping your legs warm could also prevent muscle cramps or strains.

Curtis suggests wearing “pites” when running in the cold, his coined term for a combination of pants and tights.

Like pants, your “pites” should be wind proof to keep you warm in the chilly winter winds, as well as durable enough to protect your legs if you should happen to fall on a patch of ice.

Like tights, your “pites” should provide the benefits of wicking sweat away from your body to keep you warm and comfortable.

New Balance, Mizuno, Saucony, and Sugoi are the major brands that carry “pites”.  Once you compare a good pair of “pites” next to a pair of regular running tights you will clearly see and feel for yourself how these will be useful for running in the cold.  Stop in Complete Runner to see and feel the difference for yourself.

How to Stay Warm and Dry When Running Outside in the Cold

October 31, 2012 By Complete Runner

running in the cold

Moisture is the enemy of any runner, especially when it’s cold outside.

Just because the temperature is low doesn’t mean you won’t sweat.  You can sweat in any temperature, but the problem is keeping sweat off you so you don’t freeze.  If you can keep the moisture away you will stay dry and warm, a goal of any runner in the winter.

To ensure you stay warm and dry in the winter, get rid of that bulk winter coat and dress with a base layer, running jacket, and the appropriate running tights.

Base Layer

We always say that cotton is rotten because it holds moisture close to your skin.  It is one thing to be uncomfortable when running in the summer with a wet cotton shirt, but another thing to be running in the freezing cold with a wet shirt.  Neither is desirable, but a wet shirt in the cold is dangerous for many reasons.

To keep you dry and warm you need a base layer that consists of a wicking short or long sleeve shirt to move the moisture off your skin.  That’s it.

Jacket

Over your base layer you should wear a running jacket that will continue to wick the sweat away from the base layer, moving it thru the layers and away from you skin.

Your jacket should also help to protect you from the strong winds, being wind proof and having a wind flap behind the zippers to keep your neck warm.  It should be comfortable with soft fabric around your neck and a zipper garage to keep the zipper away from your skin when fully zipped.

The jacket should also be reflective to help you been seen in the dark, and have potentially have media and zipper pockets for extra storage.  Thumb holes can be handy to help keep your hands warm, and an added touch of Breath Thermo or similar technology is always nice to not only keep you dry but actually generate heat when you run.

Pants, Gloves, Hats, and Shoes

Running tights with similar features to a running jacket is a must to keep your bottom half warm and dry from the winter elements.  A good pair of gloves will help keep your hands warm, and a wicking scull hat will pull the moisture from your head and keep the heat in and ears warm.  Your shoes should have some extra rubber around the toes as well as be waterproof to keep your feet dry.

The proper apparel will allow you to stay dry and warm in single digits, allowing you to keep your outdoor training consistent even when the elements aren’t in your favor.

3 Things to Consider When Getting Ready For Your Fall Marathon

October 19, 2012 By Complete Runner

marathon tips

You’ve been training the last twenty plus weeks for your fall marathon and believe it or not it is finally here!

Both the big Detroit and Grand Rapids Marathons are coming up fast, and all of your hard work will soon be put to the test of 26.2 grueling miles!

To help ensure a great race and marathon experience, make sure you consider the following before the big day arrives:

1 – Hydrate

It was a blistering 90 degrees when you started your marathon training, and now we are hitting 60 degrees if we are lucky, most days not even coming out of the 40s or 50s.  When it is hot it is easier to remember to drink plenty of fluids, but when the temperature drops some people forget or don’t think it is as important to hydrate.  Just like in warm temperatures you risk severe cramping and dehydration from not keeping your body hydrated before and during your marathon training and the race.  A water belt is great for long runs and will ensure you always have electrolytes close by.

2 – Taper

Make sure you follow the recommended training plans and taper off before the race.  It may seem counter-productive to drop your miles before the event but it is essential not only to be fully rested before the race but also to reduce the risk of injury.  As your miles increase the chance of injury also increases, and the last thing you want to happen is to get hurt right before your marathon.  Listen to your body and also pay attention and catch “little” injuries early before they can get out of hand.

3 – Apparel

What kind of top should you wear during a marathon?  With the cooler temperatures, we’ve seen quite a few runners continue to wear their race singlets or technical shirts along with running sleeves to cover their arms.  This way you will be warm when the race starts but can easily roll down the sleeves if you get to warm during the race.

Compression is also popular, not only to improve your race performance but also to aid in your recovery.

What tips do you have for running a fall marathon?

What to Wear to the Crim Festival of Races

August 22, 2012 By Complete Runner

New Balance Icefil

Don’t show up to the Crim in your grungy running clothes; you have trained hard for this big day and deserve some technical yet fashionable apparel to keep you cool and comfortable on race day.  Consider the following key pieces of running and walking apparel and their importance as you prepare for the Crim this Saturday:

Shirt

Your race shirt should be comfortable and made of wicking material to pull the sweat away from your skin to keep you cool.  Dri-FIT by Nike, Equilibrium Racerback by Brooks, and Icefil by New Balance are all examples of popular wicking technology.  If you have never done so, just touch the Icefil fabric and you will be surprised of how cool it is to the touch.

Shorts

Most people focus on the shirt, but your shorts are equally important since you lose a lot of heat through the crotch area.  Please leave your basketball shorts at home and consider some running shorts to help keep you cool and comfortable.

Socks

The right socks can make a huge difference on race day, so be sure to remember that cotton is rotten.  If you wear regular socks your feet will get very hot, wet, and uncomfortable very fast.  Wicking socks are a must have to keep your feet happy.

Besides shirts, shorts, and socks, make sure you wear a good pair of running shoes that are fit for your feet.

If you are lacking on any of the above apparel there is no need to worry because you can find everything you need for the Crim and all your upcoming races at Complete Runner.  Stop in the store this week and be sure to look for us at the Crim Fitness Expo on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday for your last minute Crim race needs.

Use Compression to Speed Up Recovery and Improve Race Performance

March 11, 2012 By Complete Runner

CEP Compression Socks

What’s the big deal about compression?

It seems like everyone is talking about compression these days.  In fact, we’ve carried compression products for years and were a little ahead of the demand before customers started buying.  Now, we can barely keep compression in stock!  So what is compression, and how can your running benefit from it?

The theory behind compression

Compression is really two fold.  First, compression is great for recovery.  The theory is that compression forces the blood in your legs to flush out the lactic acid built up from racing or working out to improve and speed up your recovery.  Second, runners are now using compression during the race.  For example, compression socks will keep your blood flowing to help prevent your calves from cramping and knotting up to improve performance.

How to use compression

Whether you decide to use compression for recovery or during your race, you need to make sure you purchase the correct product for your needs.  Compression used for recovery is stronger and tighter than compression used during your race.  There are actually different grades of compression, from medical to athletic grades, and the kind you need depends on its use as well as performance.  Complete Runner carries compression from CW-X, CEP, Zenzah, and others including socks, calf sleeves, shorts, and three-quarter and full length tights, and we’ll be glad to help you decide what kind of compression is best for you.

Oh, and by the way, spandex doesn’t count.

Stay Warm from Head to Toe This Winter

December 2, 2011 By Complete Runner

Mizuno Running Mens Breath Thermo Jacket

Mizuno Breath Thermo running apparel keeps you warm on winter runs.

Running in the Michigan winter is a different animal than running in the summer.  Not only do you have to look out for black ice and navigate your way through the snowy roads but you also need to battle the wind and frigid temperatures.  Since it can be difficult to run in multiple layers or in your clunky winter snow suit Mizuno offers a line of Breath Thermo apparel that should be on the must have wish list for any winter runner.

Breath Thermo is a new and revolutionary material that absorbs moisture from the body to generate heat.  Not only is moisture wicked away from your body, but it generates heat to keep you warm!  This is drastically different from the previous theory of bundling in layers to keep the heat in that we all know eventually makes you cold from your sweat.

Complete Runner caries a wide variety of Mizuno Breath Thermo apparel in stock for men and women including jackets, long sleeve shirts, pants, gloves, hats and socks to truly keep you warm from head to toe!  With this awesome gear, you won’t be able to use the excuse “it’s just too cold” anymore.
