The Crim is Over, Now What?

August 27, 2012 By Complete Runner Leave a Comment

Crim Merchandise Complete Runner

Don’t stop running or walking because the Crim is over.

We hear about this every year after the Crim.  Spring and summer come around each year and everyone is excited about the Crim.  Some people sign up for the Crim Training Program, and others train on their own.  Others don’t train much at all, dig their running shoes out of the closet the morning of, and show up at the race.

Then, the Crim is over.

A lot of people throw their shoes back into the closet until next year.  It isn’t accurate to say that everyone does this, or even a lot of people, but this is the typical story for some people.  Does this sound like you?

If you are considering retiring until next spring or summer, consider this: Now is the perfect time to continue running.

If you have been training, even sporadically, you’ve built up some mileage and endurance over the last several weeks.  Keep it up!  Don’t quit now.

Crim Finish Line

If you just tried on your running shoes for the first time a few days ago, why not try them on again?  Why not consider a healthy lifestyle of running or walking regularly?

Below are 4 Actions to Consider after Running or Walking the Crim:

1. Sign up for an upcoming road race.

Keep the momentum going by signing up for an upcoming race.  Check out the Flint running calendar on I Run Flint, 5K Races in Michigan, or Run Michigan for upcoming Flint area races and races across the state.  The fall is one of the best times to run, so don’t stop now.  Don’t mind our shameless plug, but the first ever Run4Wine registration fee increases on September 1, so consider adding this one-of-a-kind 4 mile event to your race calendar.  Custom wine glasses are available to the first 300 that register, and you will have to register fast to grab one of the two dozen or so remaining.

2. Consider a fall half marathon.

If you just finished the 10 mile Crim, why not get a half marathon under your belt?  It’s only another 5K past the 10 mile, so a few more weeks of continued mileage and you will be all set to go.  Consider the Run For Your Heart (Sept 8 in Saginaw), Capital City River Run (Sept 16 in Lansing), Brooksie Way (Sept 30 in Rochester), or the Detroit Half (October 21).

3. Set a goal.

Maybe you are looking ahead to Crim 2013, or wanting to train for that marathon you’ve always wanted to do.  Whatever it is, find something you want to accomplish and write it down.  Make sure your goals are SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely).  Once you know where you want to be, look at where you are now and determine what you need to do, and when, do make it to your goal.  It also helps to have encouragement and accountability, which leads up to our next and final point.

4. Join a running or walking group.

Motivation and accountability from other like-minded runners or walkers will keep you on track and help you to reach your goals.  Create an informal running or walking group with your co-workers, friends, or family, or join a group like Riverbend Striders or Flint Area Year Long Running/Walking Group.  You’ll meet some new people, have fun, and continue running or walking.

These are definitely not the only things you can do after the Crim, but a good place to start.  All we suggest is you don’t hang up your running shoes until next year, but consider a healthy lifestyle that includes regularly running or walking.

What action have you decided to take?

What to Wear to the Crim Festival of Races

August 22, 2012 By Complete Runner Leave a Comment

New Balance Icefil

Don’t show up to the Crim in your grungy running clothes; you have trained hard for this big day and deserve some technical yet fashionable apparel to keep you cool and comfortable on race day.  Consider the following key pieces of running and walking apparel and their importance as you prepare for the Crim this Saturday:

Shirt

Your race shirt should be comfortable and made of wicking material to pull the sweat away from your skin to keep you cool.  Dri-FIT by Nike, Equilibrium Racerback by Brooks, and Icefil by New Balance are all examples of popular wicking technology.  If you have never done so, just touch the Icefil fabric and you will be surprised of how cool it is to the touch.

Shorts

Most people focus on the shirt, but your shorts are equally important since you lose a lot of heat through the crotch area.  Please leave your basketball shorts at home and consider some running shorts to help keep you cool and comfortable.

Socks

The right socks can make a huge difference on race day, so be sure to remember that cotton is rotten.  If you wear regular socks your feet will get very hot, wet, and uncomfortable very fast.  Wicking socks are a must have to keep your feet happy.

Besides shirts, shorts, and socks, make sure you wear a good pair of running shoes that are fit for your feet.

If you are lacking on any of the above apparel there is no need to worry because you can find everything you need for the Crim and all your upcoming races at Complete Runner.  Stop in the store this week and be sure to look for us at the Crim Fitness Expo on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday for your last minute Crim race needs.

Running Tips for First Time Crim Participants

August 1, 2012 By Complete Runner 1 Comment

Crim 2012

So you signed up to run or walk your first Crim race!  Awesome!  You will soon join the thousands who claim “bragging rights” for participating in one of the coolest races in Michigan.

We put together a list of 7 Tips for Running the Crim that any first time or novice runner participating in the Crim should find helpful.

  1. Make sure you have done adequate training by having done the distance you are planning to run at least once.
  2. Test your gear at least once before the race (shoes, socks, shorts, top, etc).  Shorts and tops can cause chaffing and you don’t want to find that out midway through the race.
  3. Start your hydration the day before, 8 -12 glasses of spring water or sport/electrolyte drinks, staying away from acid drinks like orange juice.  The most important water stops are the 1st to 3rd since that’s when your body benefits from it the most.  The later in the race you are the less your body derives the benefit during the race.  You can use that water to cool yourself by dumping it over your head or down your pants (body hot spots).
  4. If planning on carbo-loading be aware of additional salt intake.  Consider slow burning carbs like sweet potatoes, avocados, or grits.
  5. Whatever nutrition or enhancement you have been using, stick with it.  This is not the time to experiment with new products.
  6. Try to hold yourself back a bit at the start of the race.  You will be tempted to go out too fast, getting caught up in the adrenaline of the race.  You will flame out and not have enough to finish.
  7. Have FUN, there’s a one in 10,000 chance you’ll win.

Crim to Introduce Wave Start to Clear Up Starting Line Congestion

July 31, 2012 By Complete Runner Leave a Comment

Crim Wave Start

If you have run the Crim at all you will know what we mean when we say to “watch out” for slower runners and walkers in front of you, because if you don’t you will likely run them over.

With about 10,000 participants in the 10 mile event, the starting line spans over a block of downtown Flint with runners and walkers of all levels sprinkled throughout.  With a setup like this there will always be someone slower in front of you , making the start of the Crim an obstacle course as you weave in and out of runners and walkers for a good mile to find your desired pace.  The Crim has realized this concern and has a plan in place for this year’s event.

By releasing a wave of runners who have a similar pace, the Crim hopes to eliminate or greatly reduce the start line congestion.  The Crim deserves credit for realizing the problem and working to make the event smoother for all participants.

Get Ready for the 2012 Crim with the CrimFit Adult Training Program

April 10, 2012 By Complete Runner Leave a Comment

Crim Training Program 2012

If you are looking to run or walk the Crim for the first time this August and just want to finish, or you are a more experienced racer and are looking to improve your time this year, the CrimFit Adult Training Program is a great way to accomplish either goal.

The program is revamped this year, with runners and walkers able to select the 10 mile, 8K, or 5K distance they would like to train for, with the runners also able to choose if they just want to finish the race or aim for a more specific time goal.  The training groups meet at locations across Genesee County every Tuesday morning or evening for 15 weeks beginning on May 15 and will guide participants through a training program to accomplish their goals come August 25.

Participants in the training program also receive an entry into the Crim Festival of Races, along with two race vouchers to use at participating races leading up to the Crim.  For instance, the upcoming Burton Memorial Day Race in May is a Crim voucher race where you can enter at no additional cost.  Participants also receive many other cool benefits, including a discount at Complete Runner, good on any shoes and apparel to help you reach your goals!

Curtis is a thirty plus year Crim runner and multiple-time group leader for the Crim Training Program.  He is excited to be co-leading a group this year where he will assist runners who are aspiring to finish the Crim 10 mile run in around a 10 minute per mile pace.

Time is running out fast to sign up for the training program as registration closes on April 16.  For more information, please inquire at Complete Runner or find more details at www.crim.org.
