You wouldn’t forget your running shoes as you headed off to run, or leave behind your race bib as you jog to the starting line. Well, some of us might, but that is a totally different discussion.
What we are trying to get across is the fact that you typically won’t forget the obvious, but somehow runners find it easy to forget about hydration before going on a run…even “experienced” runners. This can be potentially dangerous in the hot summer months, causing cramping and dehydration, making it difficult to finish your workout or race.
As you sweat out sodium, potassium, and electrolytes during your run, they need to be replaced in order for you to continue to perform your best. The best hydration for runners is electrolyte enhanced drinks, preferably with low sugar. Water will just wet your mouth as it will not replace the nutrients that you are losing.
Make sure you properly hydrate before, during, and after your run to get the most out of your workout and save yourself from cramping and dehydration. A water belt can help to keep you hydrated on longer runs and ensure you always have fluid at all times. The best advice is to be smart and plan out your hydration in advance as you would plan out your run so you don’t leave your well-being to chance.
